Extreme Makeover Home Edition
In August 2006, we received an email from the design team for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition asking if we would be interested in working with them on an upcoming episode. Of course we said yes. They found our work through our website. In late October we traveled to Logan, Utah to do the work. All work was done on site – including the cutting of 30,000 hand-cut glass tiles. The glass was donated by Delphi Glass and the glue by Bond527 Adhesive Company. Thanks so much for these kind donations. Our time, travel, work, etc. was all donated for a wonderful cause. This was the first instance where the kitchen was Ty’s “secret room” so the pressure was clearly on.
Saundra Snyder, worked closely with Ty Pennington and his design team on the design for the wall. We assembled a small team to perform the work in Logan. Melissa took a week from work and joined us, along with three wonderful mosaic artists from Salt Lake City and a host of first time mosaic enthusiasts recruited in Logan. There was no lack of volunteers.
The mosaic wall was 12 feet x 6 feet and comprised about 30,000 individual tiles. We started the work on Wednesday and completed on Saturday. We worked pretty much around the clock. The design was constructed on six Hardiboard panels. To give the wall a seamless look, we left the tiles out on the panels seams and added them once the panels were installed. The vertical work was a real challenge.
The experience was incredible. We really felt like we were part of the action. They set up a tent for us in “Art World” in the back of the new home for the Pauni family. We had VIP access and had many ocassions to mingle with the stars (Tracy, Tanya, Preston, Ed and Ty) .
They truly constructed the 5,500 square foot home in a week. Actually, the foundation was poured on Tuesday and completely finished, furnished, landscaped, and cupboards stocked by the return of the Pauni family on Sunday.
Below are more photos of our experience
